Why is it that most NBC tv political journalists, like Chris Matthews, have heavily democrat backgrounds?

Chris Matthews worked for Tip O'Neill.
Tim Russert worked for Mario Cuomo.
Brian Williams, who will replace Brokaw, worked for Jimmy Carter.
