Always look on the bright side of life, eh Jay?

In Europe, the Black Death (1347-50) killed about a third of the population. history.boisestate.edu

It vastly improved the labor market, destroying the old relationships of indentured servitude and creating new opportunities that blossomed in the Renaissance.

On the other hand, the plagues following the end of the Roman Empire did nothing of the sort -- it just decimated the population (Italy went from 6 million to 2 million between 450 and 650 AD) and -- along with incessant wars -- destroyed all wealth and trade, ushering in the Dark Ages.

You take your pick.

Cheers,
Kailash
