My example wasnt meant to be so black or white. The point was that a moderate will pick side and is very likely to side with the insurgents than ours.

The average moderate won't pick a side but to the extent that they do I don't think that they are more likely to side with the insurgents.

The main success of the insurgent is a result of the support from the locals (in hiding them, not helping us, etc etc)

In a few places in Iraq they get some support (willing in some cases, forced in others). Their successes have been limited largely because their support has been limited. The majority of Iraqis don't want the Baathist or the Islamofacists, I would say even the majority of Sunnis don't want either of those groups to be in charge. They could have picked up more support, at least among Sunnis and also among some of the Shia if the insurgency had behaved differently but it did not.
