Rather than "logical", I'd use the term geostrategic. Logic has little to do with empire building. :)

As you can see, the oil prize in Iran is concentrated in the western provinces. Thus, after enough punishment of the Iranian military, it won't be necessary for the U.S. military to actually occupy the entire nation of Iran with its 75 million rabidly anti-American citizens. Rather, western Iran can be sliced off and be made into a U.S. protectorate. Such a mode of plunder is not inherenty illogical. And it certainly is geo-strategic. :)
