OK.. so it's much more complicated than I'd assumed! I'd forgotten about the effect of spreads. I used to do tax straddles myself about 20 years ago -- not sure if they're still allowed -- but it's true that there can be lots of these in play at the end of the calendar year.

Thanks a lot for the detailed response. These threads are fantastic for learning how the markets work because there always seems to be someone with expertise or experience in a particular trading vehicle.
