Silver is used as a bactericide in surface coatings.

A couple sites that describe usage:

One new application is in paint for coating ships hulls. The silver based coating is bacteriacidal and prevents growth on the surface. Its non-toxic unlike the current coatings which I believe are lead based.

Another is silver coated films for food packaging.

Even copper has a certain amount of antibacterial action. This is why I would never use plastic for my drinking water, copper pipes all the way. With 400 lbs in the average house, how much is the water pipes, how much the wiring. Say even 100 lbs of copper in pipes we are not talking that much even with copper at $2.
