Along with Rush and a few others, Safire is responsible for transforming political debate in America from a discussion of "How do we fix our problems?" to "Let me tell you what's wrong with that traitorous little vermin across the aisle who dares to question that I am ALWAYS right!!!!!!!!"

If you descend into the gutter you get covered in shit and smell bad, no way around it. Too bad it works so well at election time.

William Safire's One Brief Shining Moment --

The Salon article mentions Safire's attack on Bush 41 for "Iraqgate", an embarrassment that Safire et al couldn't quite inflate into a full blown scandal.

When I read the recent tripe that Safire has been doling out in deference to Dubya, I do wonder what happened to the reporter/columnist who was actually doing some good journalism back in 1992:

security-policy.org

My only question is whether Safire took a dive because of a threat, or because he could see which side the bread was buttered on.....
