Smithee, I'm not really sure of the spelling. It's been a very long time. The winery I am thinking of is not the one advertising on TV around the holidays; its name was similar enough to confuse it with that winery, however.

The winery I am thinking of had been in California for gazillion years. It had been most successful and offered probably the some of the most entertaining and generous tours. If memory serves me, local politics figured heavily in its unfortunate end in bankruptcy. - Holly

Must've been another winery she was thinking of. Korbel, founded in 1882, is alive and well. OK, alive. I don't really know how well they're doing. AFAIK, fine, though. Could've reorged, but in any case, they clearly didn't shut down. korbel.com

Smithee, Okay, I now remember. It was Kornell Champagne Cellars. Very good stuff.

BTW, I agree with you re Gerry Spence (from another thread I mostly lurk). In the substance over style category, he's the very best. And he has style to spare. - Holly
