I'm sorry but I do find the following paragraph is very descriptive of an unethical company.
There's plenty of blame to go around. Vioxx' big benefit compared with older painkillers such as ibuprofen is that it causes fewer cases of stomach bleeding. But that's a problem for only a small percentage of patients. And thanks to an advertising blitz by Merck, its new drug became a best-seller, used by hundreds of thousands of people who didn't really benefit from its one advantage.
I understand fully that drugs have side effects, however in the testing they get ignored by dropping people from the test as described in this sentence companies tend to bury data from trials that show safety problems, says Dr. Joseph Lau, a professor of medicine at Tufts University,.
These are not my words, they are from qualified people.
As regards the reporting of serious side effects they are recorded in adverse reaction data bases with no statistical analysis done. That is why regarding statins the only serious side effect ever mentioned is rhabdo. It is one that the companies can't avoid after Baycol, but there are thousands of bad reports that are not analyzed. This is what Graham at the FDA is effectively saying. Notice that Astra Zeneca is stating they have no properly reported side effects, how come I reported 12 months ago a serious side effect in Canada, how come Astra Zeneca has not contacted me.
