Are you lieing again?" Prior to the election when the Times broke the news that the 81mm aluminum tubes Rice and Cheney had held up as "irrefutable" proof that Iraq was currently engaged in nuclear weapons research, Rice sat in front of Wolf Blitzer and lied to his face. BLITZER: Now, in The New York Times today, they say that, at that time, for a year you already knew the Department of Energy and others in the U.S. government were suggesting they probably were being used for small artillery rockets or other purposes, that it was a debate that was ongoing. RICE: Well, at that time, when I came on your show, I knew there was some debate out there. But I tell you, I did not know the nature of the debate. We learned later, as we were going through the NIE, the Department of Energy's objections. Other reports confirmed that Rice's staff were certainly notified of the objects, as far back as 2001. Every available piece of evidence shows that these objections were well known. I detected a minor twitch in Blitzer's face; to his discredit, he did not push the issue with her. But that's not the first time she has lied in front of the American people and the world. On the hot seat due to false reports that Iraq was trying to obtain uranium -- all Rice can say, effectively, is "its the fault of the British" and "don't pick me apart over 12 words":transcripts.cnn.com Yet those 12 words in the State of the Union speech were not placed there just because of the Niger uranium story. Every bit of vague and discredited piece of information has always been used to justify attacking Iraq.RICE: You will get different estimates about precisely how close he is. We do know that he is actively pursuing a nuclear weapon. We do know that there have been shipments going into Iran, for instance -- into Iraq, for instance, of aluminum tubes that really are only suited to -- high-quality aluminum tools that are only really suited for nuclear weapons programs, centrifuge programs . CNN transcript, 9/8/2002 Caught in another lie, as she made a claim that Department of Energy experts, the very people that design and build centrifuges for the United States' own nuclear weapons use, "thoroughly debunked". In August of 2001 this theory was "discredited". Yet Bush, Rice, Cheney continued to portray the threat from Iraq as immediate. At least one thing is for certain: this will be one Secretary of State that few foreign heads of state and diplomats actually believe. Now either the administration doesn't see this as a problem, or they don't care because diplomacy isn't a big issue for them going forward.
