"And now wew are supposed to voice our disgust in a civilized manner."

It's about purpose. It's about what you want to accomplish. Are we fighting for something that will end in a war with guns (the Revolutionary war)? Are we fighting here against some actions that killed someone? (muderers- the death penalty).

No, here we seem to be expressing indignation over an idea. Our constitution, which we fought the revolutionary war for, was putatively about the protection of ideas, and expressing them. Now the constitution is a model for government restraint against those with unpopular ideas, and the government hasn't always showed the restraint it ought to. And people don't always show the restraint they ought to. But when we are tossing around ideas, and we don't intend to actually go to war over them, perhaps getting ugly isn't the best way to influence people, even people with ugly ideas (which of course is going to be relative).

Of course if it's just a war, and you don't care at all about the other side, because they are your "enemies", because they have ugly ideas- then by all means, the scorched Earth thing works. So I guess it does come down to which metaphor you want to live with.

Back in during the American Revolution, the method of fighting was very civilized.

You are being guided by movies and folklore.

The American Revolutionary War was one of the most brutally fought in our history. Butchery and acts which we would now consider barbaric were the norm.
