You are the sort of person who would have taken early losses in North Africa as a clear sign that we would lose WWII, rather than as problems to be corrected. As far as I am concerned, we are likely to prevail, and the election had a great deal to do with dragging things out.

I cannot set a particular figure on fatalities, since one's perception of the situation alters over time. Obviously, if I became hopeless about the outcome, I would have less tolerance for casualties. Obviously, if I had reason to think that American credibility were even more at stake, I might have more. I will say that at the beginning, I was prepared for about 5 or 6 thousand fatalities.
