The 100 miles is to get from Thailand to Vietnam, going through either Laos or Cambodia. The distance for the travelers would be considerably less. 100 per day is just those crossing the boarder and this is a rural area based on the size of the towns listed on a map. I think that 100 a day crossing the boarder seeking treatment is a high number (I would think that most with the flu would actually stay at home and wait out the illness).
