One more --- that is somehow forgotten - Putin wants to set up some kind of "free trade zone federation" between Russia Kazakhstan Belarus and Ukraine.

This will result in total control of Asian energy resources and their transport to W. Europe.

After the failure of taking control of Georgia through Chechnya, Putin fight for the last chance of Central Asia energy resources.

Ukraine is rich in coal and iron ore and is also called the bred basket of Europe. By ceding control of Ukraine and let the Ukrainian people moved toward democracy and possible EU and NATO Putin will completely lose the grip on W. Europe and will need to fend for his regime as the democratic movement will spread east wards

In a nutshell we are at cross roads and I do not think the EU will let Putin plan to succeed because if it will other countries will fall to Putin expansionist policies and we will return to the grim situation of having the EVIL EMPIRE back.

It all started with Yukos and when the world went quiet Putin got appetite for more illegal action to expand his regime authoritarian rule first shot was right after the horrors in Breaslan when he canceled democratic election in the southern provinces and now Putin feels even more secure and is after Ukraine.

Wonder when the West will learn that by starting to speak English does not mean also accepting Western values
