John, he started off loosey-goosey to save the stock market after the 1987 crash. With Bush, Sr., it was more of a patriotic and intelligent President correcting the fiscal excesses of his predescessor that gently let the air out of the Reagan bubble and probably saved the US economy for a decade. Until his nutburger son took over. Greenspan was a minor supporting character under the real Bush. Under Clinton, he was given free rein to go to monetary la-la land while Rubin got our fiscal house in order.

There was never going to be a soft landing for the S&L crisis no matter what anyone did. The pile of crap had grown too high and had to tip over.
