Back from the woods at 9 am, drinking beer around the fire. They behaved OK, but I wouldn't hunt with them. Thanks for confirming the drinking does happen.Do you think there is some aspect to that incident in which the participants were victims of their own stupidity? Yes. I believe (with one exception) they raced to a potential gunfight unarmed, and they felt strength in their numbers. Both actions are stupid imo. If the one armed man did fire the first shot after the tribesman climbed out of the tree and was trying to leave, he is guilty imo of the murder of his friends. My trained friends get their guns first...Then charge into the situation. Then they would not line up. They would carefully surround the guy and maintain various distances. They would also make sure their teammates could maintain an open field of fire...there would be no straight lines between a teammate, a bad guy and me. And I'll let you in on a secret. A Team vets carry a second gun in the woods. You would never catch them unarmed even if they had put their rifle down.My interest in self-defense is to retain the principle, but I don't think I'm very well-suited to react in the same way you would. You are trained; I'm not. I would have to behave accordingly. I am not sure what accordingly means. But I think we all know a gunfight is by nature a fight to the death. If you shoot at an armed man, you better not miss. I know a helluva lot of Mnong Tribesman, 10,000 came to America legally this year. The SF Project White Star missions in the late 50s and early 60s were to train them to defend themselves from armed attacks. Those missions ended in 1962 when I was in SF training at Ft Bragg but we had some Mnongs at our A camps along the Laotian border throughout the 60s. They are fierce fighters...but not inclined to slaughter innocents. I never saw or heard such a charge. These are little people...most adults are approx 4'8" to 5'4" or less. Put yourself in this little guy's shoes. Eight big bad white dudes, riding fast and loud ATVs, race up to you shout some words. You try to leave and one starts shooting. Should you run or fight? Stupid untrained men think there is strength and safety in being in a large group of stupid untrained men. When they meet a man who is well trained and not intimidated by the numbers, they are wrong. This Mnong was born in the midst of the Southeast Asian killing fields. He knows how to assess such situations. He may have killed his first man or watched his father do it when he was a little boy. He has seen too much death to fear death in ways an American might. He is not afraid to defend himself from an armed attack. And he is not intimidated by the enemy/friendly ratio. If I was still an A Team commander, I would be investigating him right now for a team slot...and hope Delta never read about his story. uw
