Detecting asteroids would only cost millions. Actually destroying one could cost billions, maybe tens of billions, if its huge and there is time maybe hundreds of billions, but if a threat is detected the money would be worth it.

There I go again getting old "earnest" despite your "<g>" but I did want to make it clear what the cost of only a few million was for.
