bhjslj,
Postal employees retire under either the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) or Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS).

Despite popular belief, military service credit is not GIVEN under either of these systems. If the employee did not retire from the military, he is allowed to BUY his years of active duty military service by making a cash contribution of 7% of military pay, plus compounded interest to the retirement system.

I do not belong to either of these retirement systems, but my company allows an employee to buy up to four years of active military duty. It is a nice benefit for those whose careers are interrupted by military service.
