WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- New home sales in the United States increased by 0.2 percent in October from the previous month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.23 million units, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.

Data released by the department showed that October's new home sales registered the third-highest level on record.

Meanwhile, the performance in October was better than economists were anticipating. They were predicting new hole sales would go down in the month.

Aided by low mortgage rates, the housing market has been a constant bright spot for the US economy. Analysts predict that sales of both new and existing homes for all of 2004 will set new record highs.

According to mortgage wholesaler Freddie Mac, the average monthly rate on a 30-year mortgage in October was 5.72 percent, down from 5.75 percent in September and below 5.95 percent seen inOctober 2003. Enditem
