If you have not read it, Bill Bryson's "A History of Nearly Everything" is quite an interesting read.

I don't have the book with me at the moment, but I recall that one of the points he makes is that the history of life on earth is to become extinct. There have been major extinction events in the past, and there will again in the future.

Enjoy your time on earth, for it is fleeting, at least on a species-wide basis.
