If every soldier knew that their spouse and parents would be able to see everything they did during the war, there would be a lot less "collateral damage".

Well, I am not holding my breath for such freedom of information act. What I found very interesting in your perspective was that you compared such loss of privacy to more social times in human history than to sci-fi faceless inhuman times.

Scientific American has just started a new quarterly magazine, MIND. I recommend reading it. They have an interesting article on how what makes humans unique is that we seem to have a selfless gene that also pushes us to punish selfish people even at personal cost to us.
