<<<There's a major difference: around 95% of Japanese government debt is owned by Japanese. The US relies on the international financial markets, which aren't known for their loyalty.>>>

Probably you are right, although so far international financial markets have been as loyal as they can be. My interpretation is that all participants are well aware of how precarious the situation is, but no one wants to start a riot, as they don't want to be blamed later. For instance if Japanese sell their UST or just stop buying more then the ensuing Armageddon will be blamed on them. Exactly the way US is blaming high oil prices on increased demand in China.
