I would put individual freedom ahead of democracy and democracy ahead of tradition in most cases when you are dealing with economic actions or personal actions and social relationships that are not abusive or otherwise a form of aggression or fraud.

Gee, I loved that first sentence. Nt hierarchy, as well.

However when the situation goes beyond personal action and in to formal legal recognition of and support of actions the relative importance of tradition increases, and the relative importance of democracy increases even more IMO.

Unfortunately... <g>

I'm missing your nuance. Freedom and democracy have no meaning independent of law and government, or so it seems to me.

If "gay marriage in Massachusetts is creative destruction", then so is the decision not to endorse it.

Huh? Creative destruction is about change. How can maintaining the status quo be creative destruction?

Tim, all I was trying to do was to point out, like I often do, a piece that applies an argument to only the "other side." If one looks favorably on creative destruction, then one has to respect it across the board.

I sure wasn't trying to start yet another discussion of gay marriage. Your disposition of it is fine with me.
