Ray > Unlike modern day Born-Again lunatics, the "Founding Fathers" of the U.S. were for the most part sensible "deists". I.e. they were akin to modern day agnostics.

Indeed, that's the way feel about things. The deist idea is convenient if one wants to have some thoughts about "god", as most people do from time to time, and for the rest, one can go about one's life.

I have always held the Founding Fathers of the US in the highest regard. It's indeed unfortunate that so many Americans haven't a clue about their considerable contribution to civilization and are now prepared to discard what they strived for -- and what they achieved -- in favour of superstition and pre-historic ideas. But that is what has happened and that is how the US has been split -- those who believe the Constitution should determine how people live and those who believe the Bible should. And, frankly, I have no idea how this rift is going to be mended, if it ever can be, because I just see the hatred on each side getting worse and worse.
