Cheating Women 'May Blame Their Genes'

By Tony Jones, PA

Women who cheat on their partners could blame a large part of their infidelity on their genes, according to new research published today.

Professor Tim Spector, director of the Twin Research Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital, central London, that carried out the study said there may be an important reason for women to stray from their partners and added no one gene was responsible for the behaviour but a “suite” of genes.

Doctors working at the unit undertook the study to look at the genes underlying infidelity and a number of sexual partners women have.

The search found that genetic factors accounted for 40% of the reasons for an affair with other issues like a shared family environment, and more importantly individual life events accounting for the remaining 60%.

The study also found that the number of sexual partners a woman has is 38% due to her genes.

The researchers conducted a confidential survey of more than 1,600 pairs of female twins and asked them a range of questions relating to their sexual attitudes and behaviour.

The women reported previous episodes of infidelity, total lifetime number of sexual partners and also their attitudes towards infidelity.

The average age of respondents was 50, the average number of sexual partners was between four and five, and just over 20% admitted to infidelity, 25% were divorced and 98% were heterosexual.

The study found that if a woman was an identical twin and was unfaithful the chances of her identical sister cheating on a partner would double, or increase by 100%.

While the non-identical twin of an unfaithful woman would have an increased risk of 50% of having an affair.
