Well, we took WAY too much, and then we bought stuff too, and the boxes were small boxes, and my husband, the engineer, wrapped everything breakable in such well designed packaging that it ended up quite a bit bigger than it started out (and everything !!! everything arrived safely, which is really something considering how many breakable things I brought home, and of course many of those were gifts, so I would have been in really bit trouble if they'd broken)...

Silly us. But I love, adore, and cherish what we bought- because every time I look at these things, they bring back a moment in time. I have a little porcelain Robin (which ought to be spelled robbin), made by the Isle of Arran potters. The robins are different in Scotland from the ones where I live- they are tiny little birds, and the red of their robinness, covers their entire belly and throat, and they are about the size of a sparrow, but rounder. Anyway, I bought my little robin at the Nairn museum, which was the most wonderful town museum I think I've ever been in, and the people there were lovely too, and my kids had so much fun there, and after the museum we walked hand in hand down to the Nairn river, and walked altogether in the sunshine of an almost perfectly blue day, and then we went to lunch and had mussels steamed in lemongrass and butter, and fresh salmon, and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. And everything I bought is like that- it's all wonderful, it all has a story, and a marvelous memory.

But it was still a lot to unpack.

The food in Scotland is marvelous. My kids love mussels, so we ate mussels everywhere. We became connoisseurs of the many way mussels can be prepared- and we never had a bad bowl. I think it I had to single out one thing, that we enjoyed most of all, it was the desserts. They are better there. They are so much better there that when I got to the grocery store now, and look at the desserts, I just think "ick" and I don't buy anything. The sell by dates are much shorter in Scotland. You have to use things right away. Everything, even the things on the shelf, aren't filled with preservatives. We love Trifle (sherry trifle) and of course sticky toffee pudding was my absolute FAVORITE thing- I couldn't believe how good it was when I tasted it. Think a brown sugar cake, with raisins, warm from the over, drowned in carmel sauce- that's sticky toffee pudding (pudding being more of a cake than a pudding).
