Compuserve
or
300 Baud
PAC Net
No HTTP:
Then, 2400bps Internal (Skip 1200bps) BBS Systems
Then 14,400bps Internal (HTTP, Netscape 1.0) User number 700 in my city of over over a million pop.
Modem pools, rollover timers knocking you offline after 15 minutes at peak time, long waits to connect, busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy busy
Then 28.8kbps Internal (Modem pool problems diminish as infrastrcuture grows, easier connects)
Then 56kbps, Original External USR, $300.00+
Then Generic 56kbps Internal Modem $28.00
Now ADSL Modem (tested and operating near theoretical limit of ADSL for my CO) connected to a 10MBPS Wan Port routing to 100MBPS NICs among three household computers, digital camera, digital video cam.
Next - I expect the next thing will be 20MBPS on my current copper pair capable of delivering broadcast quality video. Live connections to my vehicles, my office, my PDA and other selected I/O ports around the world via a robust high speed packet switched network. Assigned IPv6 addresses, at some point with each human assigned a specific network interface identifier of some type.
Rapid expansion of pseudo-intelligence in appliances and other electronic devices (FE-RAM and kin reshaping the micro-electric world from within). A change in the basic way we approach the processing of information as multicore processors take over the current single processor landscape.
The ability to harness the power of the computer to drive the machine creating Asimov's great vision, the smart robot. The creation of wealth without the requirement of toil.

Of course the alternative path is just as attractive to many. Great plagues, floods, famine and death from the sky. Much gnashing of teeth and great pools of fire for all...rewards for a few, I can see the draw.
