At the current rate, we will hit that towards the end of Bush's 2nd term, maybe earlier if he tries harder.

Except, by that time, the primary security burden will have shifted to the Iraqis, we will be largely disengaged, and will have substantial troop withdrawals, with only a residual force based near Baghdad for as a forward deployment post.

Of course morale matters. But there is only needed so much moral to accomplish the particular mission.

Bush may not be a great student or an intellectual but there are two presidents he should know well. One was Sr. who lost the reelection by appearing to cave to the liberals over taxes while revoking his campaign pledge. The other should be fellow Texan LBJ. Bush did come to maturity during vietnam and your well taken points about fighting unpopular wars i suspect is not lost on this President. If success is not forthcoming sooner rather than later, bush will implement the declare victory and exit strategy or what i have called the 2 outta 3 aint bad scenario with a free shiaa state in the south and a free kurdish state in the north. Of course the triangle will be in some state of civil war/insurrection where we will probably try to support our guys, but not with american troops. I think things will be much clearer by midyear 2005. Mike
PS I have it at 60/40 that iraq will start working out as planned and the 2 of 3 thing will not be necessary.
