Gene,

LRCX is a better managed company, now, than it was in 1998. So, when I recommended its purchase in 1996 and continued to purchase it in 1998, it was a supreme dog. It is not easy to lose 1/2 of your book value in ~3 years. So, my biggest dollar success in the market was just "dumb" luck. It should be much easier for me to recommend LRCX, today, but, as you point out, I think the industry has changed. You are correct, LRCX should exhibit less volatility now that it is well managed. I don't think it is insignificant that LRCX's multi-year CMP efforts failed or that NVLS will succeed. These might not ever be reflected in the stock prices, but prudence requires me to act as if it will.
