It is true that Iraqi campaign involved serious risks... By removing the Saddam Hussein's dictatorship we created a possibility to help establish over there a "normal" political system -- but at the same time - true - we created an opportunity for assorted Islamists and professional revolutionary jihadis to try to capture power.

What I do not understand, is why some people seem to be so absolutely certain that extremists and crazies would be victorious over the US - and over the many Iraqis who would like some normalcy in their country.

My bet is that Iraq will stabilize, and the extremists will suffer a defeat - just as they did in Afghanistan. From what I can see, they are not in such a great shape in Pakistan either.
