The ducks don't seem to be killing the virus. It is alive and well in their intestines. It comes in one end and goes out the other. It is probably related to which receptors the virus recognizes and which it doesn't. Once it gets into humans, it attacks multiple organs leading to organ failure and death (and the organ failure may be related to over production of cytokines).
