The 'goal', if you will, of any pathogen... is to find a secure ecological niche... expand to new niches, etc.

I.e., a parasitic organism evolves towards symbiotic relationships.

A pathogen that mostly kills off it's hosts (it's ecological niches) is poorly adapted for survival, and the contagion 'burns out'.

As to 'drugs', like I said: it's good to be rich.
