Searle, this Ukranian problem is enough to split that country virtually in half. From what I have read, the Western section is pro West, the rest is solidly pro Russian. No matter who wins, the division remains and could be dangerous. These two sides are not like the Democrats & Republicans, which are basically one and the same. But like the recent US election, the split is close to 50/50. Such a split on historic and ethnic lines lead to trouble in such a big country, big population and important geographic location.

It will indeed be most interesting to see how this plays out. The arm twisting has already begun as you have noted. Hopefully it doesn't escalate beyond that, but it seems that the country cannot resolve its own division and both sides are looking for support abroad. I said hopefully, because the darker the situation, the greater the hope.
