To: Oeconomicus who wrote (89724 ) 11/26/2004 6:09:33 PM From: Grainne Respond to of 108807 I do not think many of the quotes that vegetarians and vegans use actually were written with the purpose of advocating their belief system, with the exception of the ones written by vegetarians (and historically a lot of thinkers and writers have tended towards vegetarianism). I think we just have a difference over whether it is legitimate to use them, and I think it is. People have been using others' quotes forever, sometimes not even really understanding them. If I was using Marcus Aurelius' quote to do something harmful, to to vilify him in some way, that would be different in my value system. I don't think he was promoting the consumption of chicken marsala, either! I think veganism is a little like homosexual marriage--an idea that is growing in America. More young people, whether they participate or not, are tolerant and accepting of both of these movements. College dorms now have entire vegan meal lines. Gradually more laws will be enacted to protect animals, and awareness will rise, older meat lovers will die off, and more people will look at their cheeseburgers with disgust than gleeful hunger. But it will take awhile. Thirty years ago most people smoked right at their desks at work, had cocktails for lunch, and young executives kept cocaine in their desk drawers. My, the times have changed! And they will change again. Thank you for your birthday wishes for Mr. Grainne. His birthday was weeks ago, but Grainnette has had a bad cold, so we delayed celebrating it. I am so stuffed from Thanksgiving that I do not know how I could possibly eat cake, or much of anything, really, but men are insatiable in their hunger . . .
