Why is the federal moratorium important? Without the moratorium, the entire B.C. coast would be open to offshore drilling. The B.C. government strongly supports offshore oil and gas drilling and can unilaterally lift its own moratorium. Without the federal moratorium, oil and gas companies would then have access to conduct exploration and drilling along most of the coast. The BC Province does not want to go against the Federal govt YET. The BC moratorium was put in place by the previous socialist New Democratic Govt. Hence it's only the Federal one that is really relevant.
