As Father Gregory Boyle says, "Jesus stood with everybody who was nobody. He made a beeline (always) to stand with those on the margins, those whose dignity had been denied, the poor and excluded, the easily despised, the demonized, and those whose burdens were more than they could bear. And they killed him for it." This is just a flattened leftist, stick-figure of a dead Messiah that in fact does not exist in the Scriptures. Jesus was no “dissident.” He was the Shepherd of Israel calling whoever would respond to Him, rich or poor, when He said “follow me “. He was not on the fringes of the Empire. The Empire was on the fringes of Jesus. And this is most obvious since today we speak of the Roman Empire as a now dead Empire, while the whole world, even while in its rapid heathen decline, celebrates a risen Christ. Jesus didn’t make any “beeline” to the poor. He spoke to rich and poor, often even in the synagogues. The poor flocked to Him as they always have because whereas the wealthy tend to have faith in their wealth, the poor by definition have no wealth in which to have faith. Wealth is a killer of faith. It is far easier for the poor to cling to Jesus than for the rich. Lastly, no one killed Jesus because He helped the poor. The Scriptures are very clear that the Pharisees had Him killed because He claimed to be the equal of God and His works justified His claims. There is no such thing as a “Christian Progressive.” We see here nothing but the ranting of garden variety leftists who are trying to hide behind a fake Jesus as they take pot-shots at George Bush and Karl Rove. Very shallow, very hypocritical, very leftist.
