I've heard the name, but refresh my memory. I'm not up on lawyers.

I assume you are referring to Gerry Spence, and not Johnny "If it Does Not Fit You Must Acquit" Cochrane.

Spence is a lawyer in Jackson, Wyoming. He typically wears his hair long, and is known for wearing a fringed buckskin jacket.

He does medical malpractice and personal injury, but has made his name by taking on a number of causes and appears to like to take the government on. The one case that comes to mind that he handled was the defense (largely successful) of Randy Weaver, who was involved in a shootout with U.S. Marshals and FBI agents in Northern Idaho.
