Being from Virginia I very much believe what Jefferson wrote about ideas.

"He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. That ideas should freely spread from one to another over the globe, for the moral and mutual instruction of man, and improvement of his condition, seems to have been peculiarly and benevolently designed by nature, when she made them, like fire, expansible over all space, without lessening their density in any point, and like the air in which we breathe, move, and have our physical being, incapable of confinement or exclusive appropriation."

Therefore, I would find it very difficult to consciously ban anyone from this thread. The person being banned may be just the one who needs to receive instruction and light.

:-)

I think we all end up as mud sooner or later. Some of us head for the mud sooner, some later.

Do I mean that? Probably.

I don't think I can ban people from this thread. At one time I asked SI Dave to destroy it, and the rest of my threads, but he wouldn't. I'm sorry he didn't. I think SI can be a very sick place- and I mean in a group way- not individually. I think people get sucked in to vortexes here, along with their alises, and sometimes I don't think they know they have their head underwater. I always worry, every post I make, if I am one of those posters trapped in some underwater current, not knowing that I'm there. But thinking about it brings clarity. I wish everyone would stop, and take a good long deep breath, and then just not post if they are too pissed off.

On the other hand, I met my best friend on SI, and some other wonderful wonderful people- so you take the good and the bad, and you wonder, is it worth it? I don't know

There are things right now that are very clear to me, though- it's not attractive to call people names like "moron" or moron, or moron (yeah, there are other words, too), and it's not a good thing to dogpile- no matter how "right" you think you are, because a dogpile just doesn't look right, and then no matter how right your original post was, you are wrong for doing the dogpile thing. I think the only things I am willing to act on are rudeness, and group behavior that I perceive as unhealthy (and which, of course, is a special pet peeve of mine, and as such is a totally subjective bugaboo for me).

I hope that doesn't make you too unhappy. I don't like to make people unhappy. But as I told someone else recently, I think it is important to hang on to what I think my course should be.
