Sure. Some people would pursue such studies for those reasons. But they're probably be pretty unhappy in those fields unless they were extremely independent. And maybe a bit masochistic. <g> There are always a handful of contrarians, of course. But you'd never get a critical mass.

Because they're interesting? Deal with stuff that hasn't been studied before? Don't want to leave it all for the marxists?

Or - you're forced to take at least some courses from these departments as part of a college's "diversity" or "humanities" general education requirements.
