Cjac, that people eat more when they quit smoking, because smoking and eating both fulfill oral gratifications, is only partly true and does not apply to all people who are in the process of quitting smoking. Nicotine derived from smoking also speeds up metabolism. Slowed metabolism in smoking cessation is also a factor in gaining weight, regardless of how much or what one eats or doesn't eat. - Holly

To put it in it's simplest form (since that is my preferred style)people gain weight because they eat too much. I don't know the reasons or each individual circumstance, but the bottom line is, people eat too much. They also don't get any exercise.

I have been exercising virtually all of my adult life. It has made all the difference in the world for me. I can't imagine a week without exercise. And especially since I was diagnosed as hypothyroid 8 years ago, exercise has been particularly important for keeping my weight in check.

I have also noticed a perceptive decline in appetite as I've aged.
