Open Letter to Devil Dogs of the 3.1
To Devil Dogs of the 3.1:

Since the shooting in the Mosque, I've been haunted that I have not been able to tell you directly what I saw or explain the process by which the world came to see it as well. As you know, I'm not some war zone tourist with a camera who doesn't understand that ugly things happen in combat. I've spent most of the last five years covering global conflict. But I have never in my career been a 'gotcha' reporter -- hoping for people to commit wrongdoings so I can catch them at it.

This week I've even been shocked to see myself painted as some kind of anti-war activist. Anyone who has seen my reporting on television or has read the dispatches on this website is fully aware of the lengths I've gone to play it straight down the middle -- not to become a tool of propaganda for the left or the right.

Don't be surprised that you got banned - that thread bans anyone who isn't 100% pro- Bush in the most extreme sense. The bozos on that thread think they are extreme patriots - but so were the Nazis. The attitude is the US military right or wrong.

I agree with you that part of the idea behind the free speech / free press amendment is to keep the ruling government in check.

The constitution doesn't say the US military can do whatever it wants and that you are unpatriotic if you don't mindlessly support them no matter what they do. We can see by the Abu-Gahrib prison scandal that the military needs checks. That check in the prison scandal was the press.

Besides the US does believe in free speech and a free press - it was legitimate news when that soldier shot the Iraqi so it was quite valid that it be reported and discussed. To think otherwise is to go against the US constitution - so who is really the anti-patriot?

It is also valid to draw a link between the kind of thinking that would stifle the press and Nazi Germany or Communist Russia. It's extremism and that’s a bad path for any nation to wonder down.
