The larvae can live in the water in a motor for over a week so they get moved into all the lakes when outboards go from lake to lake without flushing.

I expect that's how many of them moved -- that and from when people didn't realize they were being moved in the live wells of boats, or in water in bait buckets, etc.. Actually, I did a quick check online and found a decent page with photos of a zebra mussel and some of the preventive things people can do to try to slow down their spread -- might be of interest to anyone reading what Ish and I have been writing about if you have seen a zebra mussel before.
