ASEAN to create trade bloc with India

Vientiane: The 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) today decided to establish a 'formidable regional grouping', comprising India and China as well, that will rival the trade blocs of Europe and the United States.

"An enlarged east Asian bloc can secure not only the future of the developing and less-developing countries of ASEAN, but also the future of China, Japan and Korea," Philippine President Gloria MacApagal Arroyo said.

As part of the proposed grouping, ASEAN will sign an accord with China to create the world's biggest tariff-free market of nearly two billion people. Similar free-trade areas were planned with Japan and South Korea.

ASEAN will sign a document with India tomorrow for peace, progress and shared prosperity.
