Gay says network newscasts are WW II-vintage battleships
Newsday
It's a testament to the skill of their producers, anchors and reporters that they manage to stay afloat at all, says Verne Gay. "There's no particular logic to why these shows even exist at all right now," he writes. "A scant 21 minutes in length, the three nightly newscasts of ABC, CBS and NBC are filled with feature stories that an intrepid reader or viewer can get a hundred other places, while each program is topped with only five or 10 minutes of hard news."
