It's called arrogance. We need more people in academia with "wisdom", not "smarts". Wise people challenge their assumptions and ideas, wise people are able to listen to all sides of a position, and wise people are able to have a dialogue filled with openness and empathy. Unfortunately, out of fear and "group think" mentality, too many of our professors in the social sciences create just the opposite atmosphere. Hence we have the despicable practice of politically correct censorship, and the open silencing of conservative points of view. They all too often define diversification by the color of ones skin, instead of cultural background, or point of view. We see the same thing in mainstream news organizations such as CBS. Dan Rather, and the rest epitomize this mental model. One of the main reasons talk radio has been so effective at breaking down these barriers, is because when you tune in, you're forced to listen to other points of view and challenge your own assumptions and ideas. When people wonder why Europe acts the way it does, it's mainly because other points of view have been silenced in the media and on campuses for decades. France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and the rest of Europe need to developed their own Fox News, Rush Limbaugh's, Michael Medvede’s, Sean Hannity’s and Hugh Hewitt's. Until they do, they will continue to drown in a sea of leftist group thinking, unable to solve long-term problems of growth and creative risk taking. The former Soviet Union probably had allot of "smart people" running things as well.
