Well, fortunately, they're somewhat easily replaced. As far as personalities go, they're pretty near all the same -- grouchy and will bite at your finger if you put it near the water. Easy to match the colours. I believe most of mine usually lived for a couple of years, but you're right, they turn sort of grey when they get old -- and I find their spines start to get sort of bent -- perhaps the equivalent of fish arthritis or something.
