They may still be recovering from SARS when they initially said the case fatality was 2% and then it kept going up because the people hospitalized kept dying (their calculation assumed everyone diagnosed with SARS would survive if they hadn't died by the time did their calculation).

The real SARS number was 15%.

Now that H5N1 is 70%, they want to bring it down.

Plus they are using the wrong model. H5N1 evolves via recombination, not reassortment, so they are going to be wrong on this one also.
