I was near the scene at the time... Up until maybe a year ago or so, I still maintained a certain reverence for this thread. It was one of the last "fun" threads to head south. It must’ve been dormant or close to it, for almost two years. It used to be that submitting a nomination was done with some fear and trepidation. A nomination said as much about you as it did the nominee. I remember many a submitter being nominated because of their nomination. My favorite nominee all time was george harriman. We all loved that guy and his stories. Was he a comic genius putting one over on us? Those were fun times, this was a fun camp. I liked it better when it was dormant then what it has been for the last year. In the old days we did have people post a nomination then run to the thread and tell the poor chap that they are about to be judged but it wasn’t like today where a nomination says, “ this person believes things contrary to your beliefs”, let’s go hassle them. No, we did it to try to teach the person to be better. You know, teach them how to fit in with the community... Ok.. we could be mean and condescending back then. Instead of being a thread where we sat around chuckling about the foibles of fellow posters it’s now often a place to rally the pack to attack someone who wrote something insensitive. When george harriman was a nominee some of the thread denizens including the now dead Kerry, started a thread to help the guy out (http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsg.aspx?msgid=4418691). Yes, that’s the ticket, we were on a humanitarian mission back then. Everyone knows everyone on this site now. It’s been stagnate here since 2000. Everyone knows where everyone stands and they bond with people who feel the same way as they do. There are bitter feuds between various peoples and nominations appear here because of that. I didn’t second that nomination because I didn’t think it was an opportunity to have good clean fun. As opposed to mean spirited fun which we’ve all done. I still have a little respect for these camping grounds even if no others do. Sure I watched the train wreck and did nothing. Do I feel guilty about that? Yes and no. SI has always been about train wrecks. In the past they were about stocks. Now they seem to be about groups of angry people that dislike liberals or dislike conservatives. Why can’t we all just get along? I don’t think I’m going to burn fifteen seconds worrying about that! If you can make this place a better place. I’m all for that. As the last FBNA CEO, I don’t remember passing it on to anyone else and it sticking. If you want that title I’ll pass it on. Now for the really important question, why have so many posters changed their screen names? Could they want a new beginning? I’m going to interpret the name changes as a good sign. Maybe they want to break out of that old husk they’ve been wearing and be evaluated based on what they are saying now. I’m thinking about a screen name change. Why not, maybe everyone should do that every year? Graystone, I’m now ready for some bling-bling.
