I think carl is right about what bush will do post election. LBJ example must be in his mind.
I think you are right regarding allen missing the sunni/shiaa thing. I think you are wrong about 2006 or at miniumum its way too early to make such a prediction.
Regarding Iran, i believe that there is an unpopular mullocracy in power there. Some of the mullahs are indeed irrational. I think the iraninan people are pro-western and nationalist much in the same way the chinese are. They would love to be in a democracy but also want their nukes. They remind me of the chinese students who are against the repressive nature of their regime but are pro-economic progress and pro-strong united china.
US must play on this field not destroy it. All is not lost, even if iran gets nukes with the mullahs in power. I expect good outcomes in iran and even in NK. Iraq is a mess and likely to devolve into civil war in the triangle and a three state solution, unless of course our offensive and then successful elections do occur. I am hopeful but back to 50/50 on that one. mike
