i think what he's missing is that UNTIL the ETF was available there was no "ideal vehicle" for this group of investors, so PMs were used as a hinayana, i.e., "lesser vehicle" -g-. but with the advent of the ETF, those with a preferred habitat more suited to the ETF could be expected to swap PMs for GLD. at least that's what i did.

fwiw, i sold my GLD position today as well for a small profit.
